Fall 1985
Kurt meets Krist in 1982?. They play in several
bands together, including Stiff Woodies.
 
Winter, 1985: Kurt records a demo, titled Fecal Matter, with Dale Crover of the Melvins on drums.
 
Spring, 1987: The band plays their first gig at a house party in rural Raymond, WA. They are nearly beaten up because they didn't play any covers and they drank all their hosts beer.

Kurt, Krist and drummer Aaron Burckhard
form the original lineup of Nirvana
in Aberdeen, Washington.
 
January 23, 1988
Nirvana records a 10-song demo with the
"Godfather of Grunge," legendary Seattle
producer Jack Endino. co-honcho Jonathan
Poneman hears the tape and offers to put
out a Nirvana single. The band accepts.
 
Spring, 1988: Burckhard leaves the band. His replacement Dave Foster, lasts a matter of weeks. Burckhard rejoins and is quickly replaced by Chad Channing.

Kurt smashes his first guitar.
 
November 1988
First Single Release: Love Buzz/Big Cheese

January, 1989: Jason Everman joins Nirvana as a second guitarist.
 
January, 1989: Nirvana records their debut for Sub Pop with Jack Endino. The recording budget comes to a grand total of S606.17.
 
March, 1989: Influential British music weekly Melody Maker runs a series of pieces on the Seattle scene. The first grunge explosion is under way.
 
June, 1989: Bleach album is released on Sub Pop. The band embarks on a month-long U.S. tour. Everman leaves the band at the end of the tour.
 
October, 1989: Nirvana begins a six-week European tour with TAD
 
December 30, 1989: Krist Novoselic and Shelli Dilley get married in Tacoma, WA.
 
April-May 1990: U.S. tour. At the end of the tour Channing leaves the band.
 
August 1990: The Melvins' Dale Crover sits in on drums.
 
Sept. 22, 1990: Nirvana plays the Motor sports International Garage with Mudhoney's Dan Peters on drums. Peters quickly leaves the band.
 
September 25, 1990
Dave Grohl, former drummer for Washinton,
D.C.'s Scream, joins Nirvana.
 
October, 1990: Nirvana briefly tour England with L7.
 
April 30, 1991
Nirvana signs with DGC Records.
May-June 1991: Nirvana records their major label debut, Nevermind, with producer Butch Vig.
 
June 1991: The band does a brief tour with Dinosaur Jr.
 
August 1991: Nirvana opens for Sonic Youth on a European festival tour, including a landmark performance at the Reading Festival. The tour is documented in headache-inducing fashion in the film 1991: The Year That Punk Broke.

The Nevermind Tour starts in Toronto
 
Sept 24, 1991: Nevermind is released.
 
October 12, 1991: Nevermind goes gold.
 
November 1991: The band kicks off a six week European tour as Nirvanamania sweeps the U.S. M1V plays "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video constantly and the song is hailed as an anthem for a generation.
 
December 1991: Nirvana does three U.S. dates with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Pearl jam.
 
January 11, 1991: Nevermind hits #1 on the Billboard Album chart. The same day, Nirvana plays Saturday Night Live.
 
Jan-Feb, 1992: Nirvana tours Australia, Japan and Hawaii.
 
January 1992
Hormoaning is released
in Japan and Austrailia
 
February 1, 1992: Nevermind goes to #1 on the Billboard album chart for the second time.
 
February 24, 1992: Kurt and Hole leader Courtney Love are married in Hawaii.
 
April, 1992: The Wild Planet record store in Ventura, California is advised, by a city official to cover up the baby's penis on the cover of Nevermind. The store uses a pink Post-it note. Nirvana appears on the cover of Rolling Stone

MTV music awards, they win 2 awards

Incesticide, a collection of B-sides
and rarities, is released. It goes
gold the following spring.
 
February, 1993: Nirvana begins recording In Utero with Steve Albini.
 
April 9, 1993: Nirvana plays a concert at San Francisco's Cow Palace to raise awareness and assistance for rape survivors in Bosnia-Herzegovina. L7, The Breeders and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.
 
July 23, 1993: The band plays a surprise show at the New Music Seminar at Roseland in New York City. The band showcases songs from their yet to be released album In Utero.
 
Sept. 21, 1993: In Utero is released.
 
November 18, 1993: the MTV "Unplugged" concert is recorded at Sony Studios, New York. The album will be released after Cobain's death.
 
December 16, 1993
MTV airs Nirvana's "Unplugged" show.
 
January, 1994: Nirvana are confirmed as headlining the "Lollapolooza IV Tour".
 
January 7, 1994
Nirvana plays the Seattle Arena. It will
be the band's last U.S. show.
 
February 6, 1994
Nirvana embarks on a tour of Europe.
 
March 1, 1994
Nirvana plays their last show
 
March 4, 1994: Kurt goes into a coma for 20 hours after over-dosing on Raipnol and Champagne. By the end of the month, Kurt is reported as being restored to full health and looking forward to touring.
 
April 8, 1994: Kurt Cobain's body is discovered with a suicide note nearby
